Boyfriend (Korean: 보이프렌드) is a six-member South Korean boy group under Starship Entertainment formed in 2011. They were the second K-popgroup to after i-13 to have twins and the first boy band to do so. The group consists of Kim Donghyun, Shim Hyunseong, Lee Jeongmin, Jo Youngmin, Jo Kwangmin and No Minwoo. They debuted on Mnet's M!Countdown on May 26, 2011 with their debut single "Boyfriend". Their fanbase was officially named "Best Friend" as of August 10, 2011.
In 2011, they released three Korean singles Boyfriend, Don't Touch My Girl, I'll Be There respectively.
In 2012, a mini album Love Style and a full length album Janus, together with 2 Japanese singles Be My Shine and Dance Dance Dance / MY LADY.
In 2013, a Repackaged of Janus entitled as I Yah that was release on January 10 and a 3rd Japanese Single entitled Melody of Eyes on March 27.

[edit]Pre-debut

Jo Youngmin and Jo Kwangmin were trained under JYP Entertainment for two years.[2] By their 100th day mark of being child actors, the twins had appeared in over 300 commercials.[3] During his high school years, Donghyun starred in a variety show Conduct Zero where six rebellious high school students were made into exemplary students.[4] He was also in a Japanese group for a commercial.[citation needed] The first member of the group to be revealed was No Minwoo. Released on March 22, 2011, he made a cameo in label mate K.Will's music video "Can't Open Up My Lips" along with established idol singers IU and MBLAQ's Lee Joon.[5] Two days later, Starship Entertainment revealed a photo of the identical twin brothers, Jo Youngmin and Jo Kwangmin. It was also revealed that the two, together with Minwoo, had previously served as K.Will's back-up dancers in the variety program Quiz That Changes the World in January 2011.[6] The course of their debut was featured on M! Pick.[7] The group's first music video teaser, "Let's Get It Started", was released on May 20, 2011.

[edit]2011: Boyfriend, Don't Touch My Girl, Pink Romance and I'll Be There

On May 27, 2011, Starship Entertainment released their debut single "Boyfriend" along with the full music video. Later that day, the group had their debut on KBS's Music Bank.[8] In response to fans concerned that the group had limited its appeal in mid-July, Boyfriend changed their choreography for their single "Boyfriend" when appearing on music shows after rehearsing for two days.[9]After ending their promotions for "Boyfriend", the group followed-up with the song "You & I", which received a more positive response from music critics.[10]
On September 28, 2011, the music video teaser for Boyfriend's second single, "Don't Touch My Girl", was released. One day prior to its release, the single was leaked onto the internet, which was quickly uploaded to online torrents and video-sharing website YouTube. Starship Entertainment believed that it may have leaked by an affiliate.[11] On October 6, Boyfriend's second single, "Don't Touch My Girl", was released and the accompanying music video featured a cameo by actress Lee Se-young.[12][13] In contrast to their initially cute concept, "Don't Touch My Girl" showcased a more masculine and military-like "prince" concept.[14] On October 30, 2011, Starship Entertainment also released a special Making Story video for "Don't Touch My Girl" on their official YouTube channel featuring behind-the-scenes clips and NG cuts.
On November 24, 2011, the music video for the special digital single, "Pink Romance", a collaboration between Boyfriend and their labelmates, K.Will and Sistar, as a part of Starship Planet, was released.[15] It was also confirmed that Boyfriend would release a new winter single on December 8, 2011.[16]
On December 8, 2011, Boyfriend's music video for their third single album "I'll Be There" was released, having released a teaser a few days earlier. The video features former T-ara member Yang Ji Won, who is now a member of girl group SPICA. The song peaked at #2 on the Gaon music charts.

[edit]2012: Love Style, Be My Shine, Janus, Dance Dance Dance / MY LADY, White Love and Love Communication ~XMASS BELL~

The group signed a contract with Japanese management agency 'Being', their first Japanese special album entitled "We Are Boyfriend" was released on June 6. They marked their debut with a 10,000 seat showcase on June 30 at the Nippon Budokan. On May 2, Hyunseong released a solo song, "Only You", for the OST of The King 2 Hearts. Their debut Japanese single song is called "Be my Shine". On June 7, Boyfriend released their first mini album "Love Style" on 14 June 2012. The music video was unveiled the on June 15 through Starship Entertainment's official YouTube channel. On July 1, Boyfriend successfully completed their debut Japanese showcase ‘First Date with Boyfriend in Japan‘ at the Nippon Budokan.[17]
Boyfriend released the short PV of their first Japanese single, “Be My Shine“ on July 24.[18] On August 30, 2012 Boyfriend released the full PV of their Japanese debut song "Be My Shine" through their official YouTube account. Boyfriend released their first photobook filled with photos from unreleased pre-debut photos to after debut and their overseas promotions etc. On October 29, audio teasers for the two Japanese tracks have been revealed through Boyfriend’s Japanese Youtube channel entitled "Dance Dance Dance / MY LADY" for their 2nd Japanese single.[19]
On the 31st, Starship Entertainment revealed the first group teaser image for their comeback.[20] Boyfriend unveiled an individual cut of all the members through their official facebook and daum cafe. Their will be 2 concepts for their individual photo teasers and it was revealed everyday noon starting on October 31. The first member that was released are Kwangmin and Hyunseong on the 31st, Donghyun and Youngmin, Jeongmin and Donghyun, Youngmin and Minwoo, Hyunseong and Jeongmin, and Minwoo and Kwangmin respectively.[21][22][23][24][25][26] On November 5, Boyfriend releases the MV Teaser for Janus.[27] Aside from their domestic comeback, On 7th, Boyfriend released the short PVs for their 2nd Japanese ‘double single’ “Dance Dance Dance” and “MY LADY“.[28] Boyfriend made their comeback for their 1st Full Length Album Janus at M! Countdown, Music Bank, Music Core and with a special event for SBS 2012 Nongshim Love Sharing Concert, respectively.[29][30][31][32] On November 22, Starship Entertainment revealed a powerful dance practice video of Janus[33]
Label mates K.Will, SISTAR‘s Soyu and Boyfriend's Jeongmin have teamed up for a song. On 29th, Titled “White Love“, the duet is Starship Planet‘s second digital single project, and as a label effort, Boyfriend‘s Jeongmin has also participated as an actor for the music video! Starring with Jeongmin is ‘K-Pop Star‘ season 1 contestant, Huh Ji Won. Starship Planet's collaborative project.[29] In December 3, Boyfriend released the PV’s for their Japanese ‘double single’ “Dance Dance Dance” and “MY LADY“.[29][30] The boys held a high touch event in celebration of their second single album, ‘Kimi to Dance Dance Dance/My Lady‘, on December 1 and 2 at the Kobe World Hall and the Saitama Super Arena.[34] Boyfriend performed for their 1st solo Japanese concert entitled “Love Communication 2012 ~XMASS BELL~”. They held 5 concerts at the Tokyo Dome City Hall from December 22 to 24 with a total of 12,500 fans in all.[35] KBS Joy released a video teaser for Boyfriend's Hello Baby season 7 released on December 27. The members started shooting for the reality series this December, and the first broadcast is planned for January 4 of 2013 at 11PM KST.[36]

[edit]2013: I Yah, Melody of the Eyes, GOGO♂ IkeMen5

Boyfriend will be making their return with a new repackaged album. According to Starship Entertainment, the group plans to make their comeback with the release of their repackaged album on January 10.[37] Boyfriend has released the teaser photo of the twins Youngmin and Kwangmin on 4th next are Donghyun and Hyunseong on 5th and Jeongmin and Minwoo on 5th from Starship Entertainment's official twitter. As the boys recently finished up promotions for "Janus" fans were surprised to hear about another comeback in store. However, as “Janus” was a huge hit for them, their next track is much anticipated by the group’s old and new fans.[21][22][23] Charismatic child actress Kim So Hyun played a role in Boyfriend’s latest music video! A photo of her on the music video set was posted to Starship Entertainment‘s official Twitter.[38] They revealed their group photo teaser with a concept of like-matrix and more matured image to the group.[39] Starship Entertainment releases Boyfriend's music video teaser for their comeback track "I Yah".[40] After releasing a MV teaser for Boyfriend‘s comeback song “I Yah“, Starship Entertainment also unveiled couple shots of Boyfriend’s Donghyun and child actress Kim So-hyun.[41] After the release of their video teaser, they released their official music video of I Yah (Repackaged)! After the released, they ranked #1 on music charts such as Bugs and Cyworld. Not only, so but as soon as they released their album, they became the #1 searched term on portals sites such as Daum and Naver.
Boyfriend will become the first foreign artist to sing for the anime. Their song, "Hitomi no Melody“, is the title song of their 3rd Japanese single album, which will be released on March 27. The song has been picked up as the ending theme song for ‘Detective Conan’, and as such, there will be a ‘Detective Conan’ album version in addition to the regular album versions. The song is a love song that talks about an innocent love for a precious person.[42]
Boyfriend members will play the leads in a Japanese movie titled GOGO Ikemen 5 as revealed by Sankei Newspaper on February 7. GOGO Ikemen 5 is based on a popular novel, where five flower boy students fall in love with the same girl. It is yet unknown who the lucky female lead is. Boyfriend will also be singing the main theme song.[43]
